Cookies
What this site stores on your device.
Less than most. Nothing at all until you have chosen, apart from two small values that remember the choice itself and the language you are reading in.
The short answer
We use no advertising cookies and no tracking pixels. Nobody is building a profile of you here and nothing follows you to another website. We count visits, because we would like to know whether any of this is working, and we do most of that counting in a way that sets no cookies at all.
Always on
These two are not really cookies. They are small values kept in your own browser, they never reach us, and the site cannot do what you asked without them. They need no consent under either POPIA or the European rules.
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
| holt-lang | Remembers whether you are reading in English or German, so the site stops asking | Until you clear your browser |
| holt-consent | Remembers what you chose in the banner, and when, so we can prove we asked and you are not asked again | Twelve months |
Counting visits without cookies
Cloudflare Web Analytics tells us how many people came and which pages they read. It sets no cookies, it does not fingerprint your device and it cannot follow you anywhere else. It runs whether or not you accept anything, because there is nothing here to consent to.
Only if you accept
If you accept analytics in the banner, Google Analytics loads and sets the cookies below. It tells us more than the cookieless count does: which pages lead to an enquiry, and roughly where in the world our readers are. If you reject, it never loads, and no request is made to Google at all.
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
| _ga | Tells one returning browser apart from another, so two visits are not counted as two people | Up to two years |
| _ga_<id> | Keeps the state of your visit for Google Analytics | Up to two years |
Until you accept, Google Consent Mode holds all of it in a denied state, which is the default this site ships with.
Changing your mind
Choose again at any time:
Rejecting later stops any further collection. You can also clear cookies and site data for this site in your browser settings, which resets everything including the two values above, and the banner will simply ask again.
Do Not Track, and P3P
We honour your browser's Global Privacy Control signal where it sends one, and treat it as a rejection. P3P, which you may still see mentioned in older guidance, was retired years ago and no current browser supports it, so there is nothing here to implement. The banner and the consent signals above are what actually do the job.
More
What we collect beyond this, and what you can ask us to do about it, is on the privacy page.
